The Kyle Collective: Search for 781229

2008 Emmy nominee for Best Interactive Television

Client: ABC Family
Agency: At Play Studioskyle_781229_500

I conceived, pitched and wrote The Kyle Collective, a multimedia Alternate Reality Game that had fans across the globe cracking puzzles and gathering clues in a quest to find 781229, a next generation bio-computer from the good folks at Madacorp, the evil corporate overlords on ABC Family’s sci-fi series Kyle XY.

Of course, 781229 isn’t just a computer. She is also a young girl who’s desperate to escape from her corporate masters. See her birth on youtube!

My contributions included:

  • A feature-length script with original characters and situations
  • Conceiving, wire-framing and writing two fictional sites: and the Latnok Society
  • Conceiving, wire-framing and writing secure intranets packed with clues, videos and heaps of misdirection
  • Content strategy for a 10-week episodic adventure
  • Creating an “ARG-for-dummies” concept that used a real-life fan named Cooper, who helps fans piece together the story. Cooper blogs at about the game — at least he did, until Madacorp kidnapped him in the season finale!

Additional Credits

Photography, puzzles, and design: Clifford Chen
Additional puzzle design and Flash coding: Dexter Lee
Producer: Thuy Tran
Starring: Niccolo Boldrin, Audrey Cain

Hey Ben. You must tell us how it would have ended had they not pulled the plug on the game due to funding. Some of us really enjoyed the game and were disappointed that it ended so abruptly.

    Hi Aaron!

    We were bummed too.

I’ve asked the folks at abc family for permission to tell Cooper and 781229’s tale.

Or maybe they’ll let us do an interview with 781229’s army.

    I’ll keep you posted.

Thanks for diving into Cooper’s world.
